Eat for whiter teeth

According to dental surgeon Dr Raymond Garrison, chairman of the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre department of dentistry, chowing down on certain foods can help whiten your teeth naturally and keep your teeth white after bleaching.

Garrison says firm fruits and vegetables help keep teeth white by scrubbing them as you chew – try apples, green beans, cauliflower and celery.

In addition to scrubbing teeth, they promote the flow of saliva, which helps neutralise acids and protect teeth, says Garrison. Dairy products, especially those high in calcium or hard cheeses, can protect teeth from decay and remove particles from between teeth. There are also some foods you should avoid if you want to keep your teeth at their whitest: blueberries, red and white wine, soy sauce, coffee, tea and soft drinks. And, don’t smoke.
