'Friends' Bombshell: Monica and Chandler Were Never Meant To Stay Together

Can you imagine a world where Monica and Chandler never got together? We don’t know about you, but that’s a world we never want to live in.

But in news that is sure to send every Friends fan into a downwards spiral of panic, a co-creator of the series says that the beloved couple, played by Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry, was never actually supposed to last.

Marta Kauffman, who created the series with David Crane, said that the romance between the two central characters was only meant to be a "one time thing".

Thankfully, a rowdy, overjoyed studio audience saved the day when Monica Gellar and Chandler Bing got together in season four, while in London for one of Ross's ill-fated weddings.

"We had no idea what response that was going to get... We had to stop [taping] because people were screaming," Kauffman told fans at the ATX TV festival in Texas.

"We thought it was going to be funny and we were going to get rid of it. Suddenly the audience told us they had been waiting for that and we had to rethink how we were going to keep going and change the relationship."

Kauffman also revealed that Monica and Joey were initially meant to be the central, loved-up couple in the show.

Yeah, we know, that freaks us out to.

Luckily for our other favourite Friends pairing, Rachel and Ross, the creators always knew they were destined to be together, but they did consider keeping them apart in the finale "for about four seconds".

"That would have been dumb," Kauffman said. "In the very first episode we see that he loves her."
