Mum shocked to find creepy note in daughter’s homework

A mum was shocked to discover a chilling message from her ‘lovely’ seven-year-old daughter while looking through her homework book.

Stephanie Furneaux, 33, saw her eldest daughter Poppy had creepily written, “In March I found poison to destroy you,” in her exercise book as part of her cursive homework practice using a list of specified words.

The mum of two said she burst out laughing when she first read the ominous message and then started to feel a bit worried – but admitted she was impressed by the schoolgirl’s creative writing.

“Poppy has homework every weekend where she has to do a page of spellings and then make a sentence using the words,” The Cornwall mum said.

“She didn’t actually show me what she’d done at the time. I thought I would have a look to see how she was doing and check that she’d finished it and then I read that sentence.

“I just burst out laughing and then I started to get a bit worried, I thought it sounded a bit ominous.

“I was thinking ‘maybe my child is an evil genius’.

“I’m not locking my bedroom door at night though, she’s a lovely girl really so I’m sure I’m safe.”

The words Poppy was given for the writing exercise were January, February, March, knock, knitting, destroy, royal and poison.

The homework instructed the kids to practise their spelling by writing some of the words in a sentence.

“I texted my husband James and I think he was a bit more sensible about it,” Stephanie said.

“He pointed out she didn’t have that many words to make a sentence from so from what she was given she did a good job.

“I haven’t mentioned anything to her about it, I just think it was clever of her to make a sentence from it. I couldn’t really say anything because it would be hard for her to understand and she’s not actually done anything wrong.

“I thought the teacher would have acknowledged it with a smiley face or something but there was just a green tick.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he got some similar sentences from her classmates.”

Stephanie who also has another daughter, four-year-old Seren, decided to share a picture of the homework online asking “should I be worried about my seven-year-old?”

“I decided to share it on social media because I love seeing the other things that people post about their children,” she said.

“You feel like you’re not the only one with quirky children who do and say funny things. It’s funny to see how their little minds work and the things that they write without realising how humorous they are.

“I think this shows the weird and wonderful things that kids do.

“Poppy is very bright and loves reading, she’s always got a book in her hand. She’s just a happy little seven-year-old.”
