Mum mortified as grocery store censors graduation cake

A mum in the US isn’t all that happy after a grocery store censored the writing on her son’s graduation cake.

It was supposed to include the Latin phrase “Summa Cum Laude”, which translates to “with the highest distinction”, but that’s not what Cara Koscinski got when she saw the AU$90 cake.

Another family member, who didn’t know what it was supposed to say, picked up the cake, which read, “Congrats Jacob! Summa — Laude class of 2018.”

Cara explains that she placed the order online, and when filling out her message, the box rejected the word “cum,” which is the Latin word for “with”.

It seems the computer marked it as a naughty word and substituted the letters for three hyphens, so Cara filled in a second box for special instructions, where she explained the Latin phrase and placed the order.

Unfortunately that amendment wasn’t carried through and she was mortified with the result.

“[They] refused to write the words Summa Cum Laude because I was using ‘profanity!’,” she writes on Facebook, “They put three dashes instead of the word! How utterly ridiculous”.

“My son was humiliated!!! I seriously couldn’t make this crap up!!!!”

Thankfully, Cara says the store gave her a refund and a gift card when she complained, but the awkwardest part was having to explain why the word got censored to her 70-year-old mother.

Hopefully they’ve been able to have a laugh about it since.
