Mum's response to son breaking $180K statue angers parents

A mum has been slammed online after she claimed she wouldn’t be paying for a piece of artwork worth $180,000 her five-year-old son knocked over.

The glass sculpture, called Aphrodite di Kansas City, was on display in Overland Park community centre, in Kansas.

The boy was attending a wedding with his mum Sarah Goodman when he ‘hugged’ the statue and it fell on top of him and onto the ground.

Now, the City of Kansas is reportedly demanding that Sarah Goodman pay the $180,000 for the damage caused.

The mum claims that her son might have ‘hugged’ the torso of the sculpture because he’s such a ‘loving’ boy.

“It’s clear accidents happen and this was an accident,” Goodman told the Kansas City Star.

“I don’t want to diminish the value of their art. But I can’t pay for that.”

Sarah Goodman also claimed that the piece of art was out in the open and not enclosed behind a line, in a busy area.

Bill Lyons, the man who created the sculpture, wasn’t impressed with the mum’s response, especially considering it took two years for him to complete the project.

“I want to be reimbursed for the amount of time that I spent on it and for what I think it is worth.”

In a video posted to YouTube, people were angered at the mum’s response to the accident.

“Take responsibility you didn’t pay attention to where your child was and this happened! Excuses excuses excuses! Pay for your mistake,” one person said.

“The mother needs to watch he son and to take responsibility for his actions.,” another person said.
