Drugs allegedly smuggled on cruise in underwear

Four male crew members from the cruise ship Norwegian Sun have been arrested in the US for allegedly smuggling cocaine in their spandex underwear.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that the men, working on the ship which had sailed from Honduras to Tampa, Florida, first attracted the attention of authorities by appearing unusually anxious while making cellphone calls outside a Tampa port-side Hooters restaurant.

A federal complaint reportedly stated that the men were picked up by two women in a car, who returned them to the port an hour later without their alleged cargo, which authorities said they had carried into the country in their underwear.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the women were stopped by a Pasco County sheriff with a narcotics-sniffing dog after checking out of the hotel where the group had met.

Four bundles of cocaine, totaling about seven kilograms, were allegedly uncovered during a vehicle search.

The four crew members, two women and an alleged lookout were reportedly arrested on federal drug smuggling charges.

According to the federal complaint, the men were found to have nearly US$50,000 in cash at the port and receipts showed they had wired money to others.
