Nicole's tribute to her adopted children

Nicole Kidman has revealed that her latest movie, Lion, is a “love letter” to her adopted children.

The film sees Nicole's character, Sue, and her husband, John, adopt a five-year-old boy from an orphanage in Calcutta, only for him to go searching for his real parents 25 years on.

And the actress says she did the film as a tribute to Isabella and Connor, who she adopted in 1993 and 1995 respectively with her then-husband Tom Cruise.

“It's not about anything other than, ‘I wanted you whatever your journey is, I'm here to love and support you,’” she told the Daily Telegraph.

“That's what I connected to. I wanted to make the film for them.

“When you are an adoptive mother, of course you think about the birth mother and the birth parents and what it all means and how our lives are intertwined in some way, whether the child choose to find the birth parents or not.”

Nicole and Tom split in 2001 and Connor and Isabella, who were raised as devout Scientologists, chose to live with Tom.

Back in 2007, she revealed they’d stopped calling her “mum”, telling GMTV: “My kids don't call me mummy, they don't even call me mum. They call me Nicole, which I hate and tell them off for it.”

What’s more, Tom’s then wife Katie Holmes was widely reported to have claimed they’d started referring to her as their mother.

However, in 2012, Isabelle confirmed she was back in touch with Nicole.

“I love mum. She's my mum. She's great. I see her sometimes and I speak to her… We’re a very close family,” she told New Idea. “I love all of our family.”
