One thing you should, but probably never do on a plane

The school holidays are among us meaning more and more people will be packing their bags and jetting away to some exotic location for a nice holiday vacay.

But when it comes to flying, experts say that all passengers should be doing this one thing on every flight, and it’s probably something you never knew about.

While we always think of putting sunscreen on when going to the beach or spending the day outdoors, has it ever crossed your mind to apply before you fly?

Turns out that it is something that pilots do every time given they are surrounded by very large windows. And though the windows throughout the rest of the plane aren’t as big, it can get pretty bright outside.

Pilots are at higher risk of skin cancer and sun-induced damage as they sit in bright light,” Dr Sweta Rai of the British Association of Dermatologists told Sun Online Travel.

“The windows they sit at when piloting the plane are huge and as a result, they wear sunscreen as standard. But passengers on flights should take heed and do the same.”

She pointed out that while the windows may be smaller, you’re closer to the ozone layer on a flight by tens of thousands of feet.

“The sun’s rays are much more harmful at this level and we should all be wearing sun scream when flying,” she said.

A simple way to stay protected is to use a moisturiser with an SPF of 30, that way your skin stays hydrated and won’t burn.

On top of this, Dr Rai also recommends wearing sunglasses on a long-haul flight, which pilots do.
