Outrage as mum admits she sits in a different class to her kids on planes

Flying with kids has to be one of the worst things about taking a holiday as a parent.

Not only is there a huge chance you’ll have to deal with a mid-flight tantrum and get disapproving looks from fellow passengers, but then there’s the jetlag which lasts for days after you land.

However, one mum has caused a fierce debate online, after revealing that she actually sits away from her children on planes, in a different class.

British TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp told The Sun that she and her partner Ben treat themselves from time-to-time by upgrading to premium economy and leave their young sons, who are nine and 11-years-old, in regular economy.

However, while she stood firmly by her parenting stance, Kirstie copped a lot of flak on Twitter by parents who couldn’t believe she would sit apart from her kids.

Kirstie hit back, saying that she doesn’t care what anybody else thinks of how she decided to travel.

“Did I seek anyone’s opinion on this? I was asked by the @TheSun and I said what I do, I don’t give a flying fig what anyone else does with their hard earned dosh,” she wrote.

She went on to say that it’s ‘utter rubbish’ people think kids needs to be looked after when they’re just ‘sitting on a plane watching movies’.

“That’s not parenting it’s fussing,” she wrote.

People were quick to call Kirstie out with one woman totally disagreeing with the TV star.

“11 and 9 years old.. I would want them within my eye sight if not possible to sit together. Bad turbulence, disruptive passengers etc isn’t pleasant for children to experience whilst their parents are clueless sitting in first class,” one woman wrote.

Another woman wrote: “Sorry to be on such a rant roll. But parents who duck their responsibilities while casually letting strangers pick up the slack make me sick. At the very least bring a child minder along.”

This irked Kirstie, who claimed she’s not ducking her responsibilities and her children are “quite capable of looking after themselves”.

She went on to say it would be ‘pathetic’ if they weren’t able to fend for themselves on a flight.

Kirstie said that cabin crew often commend her sons on how well-behaved they are in the sky and she makes sure she always introduced herself to the flight attendants before takeoff ‘and say if there are any problems to alert me immediately’.

“I know loads of people, some who follow me on Twitter, who do just the same with their kids on planes, because they’re equally fearful of spoiling them, but they’re all a bit quiet today,” she said.

“People parent differently, I think letting 10-year-olds have social media accounts is far more risky than anything that could happen on a plane, and the biggest dangers come from adolescent mental health issues.”
