Why Prince George has to curtsy to the Queen and Princess Charlotte doesn't

We may have already seen Princess Charlotte curtsy to dignitaries in Berlin last year, but it turns out she doesn’t have to bow to the Queen for another while yet.

Her brother, Prince George, on the other hand, is now apparently required to curtsy in front of his 92-year-old grandmother, since he turned five-years-old last week.

“Certainly, by age five. The only person they will be expected to curtsy or bow to is the sovereign,” historian Marlene Eilers Koenig, told Hello! magazine.

Royal curtsying is a minefield in itself, with certain old traditions still remaining in place.

Newest member of the royal family, Meghan Markle the Duchess of Sussex, is believed to have been put through princess training to learn the ins and outs of royal protocol.

Firstly, only women curtsey (while the men bow) and your rank changes depending on whether you’re a full-blood royal or born a commoner.

If you weren’t born into the family, you adopt your husband’s rank when he’s present, but you sink down a few rungs if you’re on your own.

So, according to royal expert Christopher Wilson, Meghan will have to curtsey to Harry’s cousins Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice if she’s on her own.

However, if Harry is by her side, Eugenie and Beatrice will curtsey to her.

And while they haven’t been caught on camera greeting each other, Meghan is also said to have to curtsy to Kate Middleton when she’s in her presence.

Meghan doesn’t have to curtsy to Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Phillips, due to her place in line to the throne.
