Prince Harry will snub this royal tradition on his wedding day
Back in his partying days, Prince Harry was famously snapped stripping on a wild lads’ weekend in Las Vegas, and fell into a pool fully clothed while living it up in Croatia – so it’s not much of a surprise that the royal is set to break with tradition on his wedding day.
But the 33-year-old is set to do so in the sweetest way.
Harry, who was famously known as the party prince before settling down with former Suits actress Meghan Markle, has chosen to do something very different to his brother Prince William, and grandfather Prince Phillip.
Rather than going barehanded in his marriage, like other male members of the royal family famously do, it’s believed Harry will don a wedding band.
“[He does want to wear a wedding band” while married to Meghan, a source recently told E! News.
Unlike his older brother, Harry is often seen out-and-about wearing an array of jewellery, like the matching bracelets he has with Meghan, and a silver bangle he’s pictured with on occasion.
Prince William’s desire to go without a ring has nothing to do with his commitment to his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, but is more of a ‘personal preference’.
Avid royal watchers will have noticed that it’s just not his style.
Speaking to Time magazine just before his own royal wedding back in 2011, a royal spokesperson explained why Wills had decided not to wear a ring.
“It is simply down to personal preference,” the royal aide said.
“It was something the couple discussed but Prince William isn’t one for jewellery.”
Kate, on the other hand, has two gorgeous rings: one being the huge 12-carat oval sapphire ring that once belonged to Princess Diana and the other – her wedding ring – a simple gold band.
William isn’t alone in his choice to keep his hand free of any jewellery, as his grandfather, Prince Philip, who married Queen Elizabeth in 1947, also chooses to not wear a ring.
Considering men’s wedding rings only came into fashion in the mid 20th century, it wouldn’t have been considered the done thing back when the duo wed.
Men apparently started wearing wedding rings back in the world wars as a way of remembering their wives back at home.
Prince William’s father, Prince Charles, now wears a gold signet ring after marrying Camilla in 2006.
Likewise, Prince Andrew also wore a gold band – but on his pinky finger – before his divorce from Sarah Ferguson was finalised.
