But in true royal mania, there’s already another next question on everyone’s lips: where is Prince Louis of Cambridge’s place in line to the throne?

On Friday morning it was announced the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their third child Prince Louis Arthur Charles, Kensington Palace revealed via Twitter.

From the royal family’s quick reshuffle to Prince Louis of Cambridge’s history-making birth, here’s everything you need to know about the current line of succession.

Will Prince Louis ever become King of England?

On 23rd April 2018, Princess Charlotte made history after becoming the first female member of the royal family to outrank her younger sibling in the line of succession. For instance, when Prince Andrew was born he skipped over his elder sister, Princess Anne, in line to the throne.

Shortly after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s 2011 wedding, the UK government passed the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 meaning that the couple’s first child would fall next in line to the throne regardless of its gender.

Therefore, the two-year-old ‘spare to the heir’ is now tipped to bag the crown before Prince Louis ever will. So it’s highly unlikely that the newborn will ever become sovereign (perhaps why the royal couple chose a more relaxed name).

Lesser-known Prince Richard – the youngest grandchild of King George V and Queen Mary – was also affected by the revolutionary law.

His granddaughters, Lady Senna Lewis and Lady Lyla Gilman, are now ahead of their younger brothers in line to the throne.

Where is Prince Louis in line to the throne?

Prince Louis was born fifth in line to the throne. His grandfather, Prince Charles, is currently behind his mother Queen Elizabeth II. Next comes Prince William followed by his children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. However, it is widely speculated that Prince Charles may give the throne to his son if Her Majesty passes away.

Prince Harry on the other hand, has been bumped down the line of succession with every one of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s new additions to the family.

Currently, Harry stands at sixth in line to the throne just behind his newest nephew.

In seventh place comes Prince Andrew (who was born second in line to the throne) followed by Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

How did Prince Louis’ birth affect the line of succession?

When Prince Louis was born on 23rd April 2018, Prince Andrew fell out of the top six in line to the throne.

Therefore, he would not have to seek permission from the Queen if he wishes to re-marry. Whereas, siblings Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will have to ask the monarch before popping the question.

Why is the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s third child a prince?

When the Duchess of Cambridge was just a few months pregnant with Prince George, the Queen stepped in to ensure that her unborn child would have the right to become a prince or princess.

A Letters Parent issued by King George V (Her Majesty’s grandfather) in 1917 would have prohibited this meaning that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children would have been given the title of Lady or Lord Mountbatten-Windsor.

To combat this, Her Majesty issued a Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm in December 2012, which declared “all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of Royal Highness with the titular dignity of prince or princess prefixed to their Christian names or wish such other titles of honour”.
