Prince William and Kate Middleton's very awkward first encounter

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s love story has played out for the whole world to watch, and many royal fans will perhaps view it as the fairytale romance.

But shock horror, the royal couple are actually real people who have had their fair share of awkward moments.

So much so, one of their first encounters was so awkward, the story could have been taken right out of a romantic comedy.

Let us cast our minds back to 2001. William and Kate were both embarking on the next stage in their lives, attending university at St. Andrew’s in Scotland.

The pair were both living in the same halls of residence and they were introduced to each other.

However they were both as endearingly awkward as one another, according to royal biographer Christopher Anderson.

A shy 18-year-old Kate immediately curtsied to the royal, which we’ll forgive because that is normal royal protocol. But then Wills, smooth as can be, spilled a drink all over himself.

During their engagement interview in 2010, Kate admitted to being “very shy” when she first met the prince.

“I actually went bright red when I met you and scuttled off feeling very shy about meeting you,” she told the BBC at the time.

“William wasn’t there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn’t there from Fresher’s Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on.”

But 17 years later they’re married with three adorable children, with a fabulously awkward story to share about their first meeting.
