After months of speculation, Kensington Palace have officially confirmed that Prince William will be Prince Harry’s best man at his upcoming wedding.
There was some doubt over whether or not Prince William would be given the role of Harry’s best man, considering the nuptials are due to take place on May 19th at Windsor Castle, on the same day as the FA Cup final.
Prince William is the President of the Football Association but it’s expected he will make a mad dash from Windsor to Wembley so he can attend both events on the same day.
“Prince Harry has asked his brother The Duke of Cambridge to be his Best Man at his wedding to Ms. Meghan Markle,” Kensington Palace said in an official statement.
“The Duke of Cambridge is honoured to have been asked, and is very much looking forward to supporting his brother at St George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 19th.
“Prince Harry served as best man to The Duke of Cambridge at his wedding to Miss Catherine Middleton in 2011.”
Indeed, Prince Harry was right by Prince William’s side when he said ‘I do’ to Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey in 2011.
However, apparently there’s actually no such thing as having a best man at a royal wedding — but William broke protocol to honor his sibling when he wed Kate Middleton.
Marlene Koenig, British and European royal expert, told Town & Country that “the best man or best men are officially called supporters.”
She did add that “William will probably be Harry’s supporter,” carrying on the sibling tradition that was also displayed by the brothers’ father, Prince Charles.
For his wedding to Princess Diana in 1981, he chose his brothers, Edward and Andrew, to be his “supporters.”
