Princess Anne on the moment a gunman tried to kidnap her

She’s a member of one of the most high-profile families it the world, who has no doubt gone through rigorous training in kidnapping situations.

But nothing could prepare Princess Anne for the moment a gunman stopped her car on The Mall near Buckingham Palace and tried to force her out.

In a resurfaced video from the mid-1980ts, the Princess talks in an interview with Sir Michael Parkinson on BBC1, about exactly what happened that night in 1974, alongside her former husband, Captain Mark Phillips.

It was about 8pm mat night and the princess and Mark were on their way home, with their driver making his way along The Mall.

Out of nowhere, a man with a gun stopped the car and the princess’ security got out.

Unfortunately, his gun jammed and he was shot and seriously injured.

The gunman then opened the door, where he was faced with a defiant Princess Anne and Mark Phillips.

“He opened the door, and we had a sort of discussion, hah, about where or where not we were going to go,” Princess Anne said to

“He said I had to go with him, can’t remember why.”

“I said I didn’t think I wanted to go.

“I was scrupulously polite. Because I thought it’s silly to be too rude or that sort of thing, and we had a fairly low-key discussion about the fact that I wasn’t going to go anywhere.

“And wouldn’t it be much better if he moved away and we’d all forget about it?”

A policeman then wandered over and tapped the gunman on the shoulder before he was shot.

Princess Anne said the moment that really angered her was when he ripped the back of her dress.

“When he shot the police man we did manage to shut the door,” she said.

He got the door back open again but in the process of getting the door back open the back of my dress split and that was his most dangerous moment.

“I lost my rag at that stage.”

Princess Anne was on the floor of the car but she could reach the door and managed to open it and somersault out.

The gunman eventually moved to the front of the car and the princess got back inside.

The police were there at that stage and the gunman raced off into the nearby park

Princess Anne went on to say that ‘public figures have always been in danger to some degree’ and she had often thought about something like that happening to her.

Queen Victoria had five attempted kidnaps during her reign an even Queen Elizabeth was shot at in 1981.

Thankfully it was a replica gun, however the man was still convicted.
