Princess Mary and Prince Frederik hit the seas in Sydney

She’s heir to the throne in Denmark, but Princess Mary hasn’t forgotten her Australian roots.

The 45-year-old and her husband Crown Prince Frederik, 49, have arrived in Sydney for a spot of sailing.

The couple and their four children plan to spend the Christmas holidays in Mary’s home state of Tasmania, but not before they indulged in one of Frederik’s favourite hobbies.

Hopping aboard the Sydney to Hobart winning Wild Oats XI on Tuesday, the royals were seen racing around Sydney Harbour which is playing host to the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge. Mary was seen with a camera in hand, and snapped photos while sitting on the side of the superyacht.

Frederik was out on the Wild Oats XI's sister vessel Wild Oats X, back in August while he was sailing around Hamilton Island.

His wife Mary was unable to fly to Australia at the time as their six-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, were just starting school for the first time.

The much-loved royals last visited Australia as a family in 2015 to spend Christmas with Mary’s relatives.

Prince Christian, 12, Princess Isabella, 10, and twins Vincent and Josephine, were pictured hanging out at the beach with their parents as they enjoyed the summer sun.

The family’s current trip Down Under comes amid turmoil amongst the Danish royals, with reports claiming Mary could become Queen in the next few months.

It came after it was revealed that Frederik’s father, Prince Henrik, has been diagnosed with dementia and his mother Queen Margrethe, had to cut short a trip to the UK due to an unknown illness.

A statement released by the Danish royal family in September announced 83-year-old Prince Henrik’s condition.

“Following a longer diagnostic process and lately a series of examinations during late summer, a specialist team ... has now concluded that his Royal Highness Prince Henrik suffers from dementia,” it said.

“The extent of the cognitive failure is ... greater than expected considering the age of The Prince.”

Just one month prior to his diagnosis, the Prince had revealed in a shocking interview that he did not want to be buried alongside his wife.
