Radio star Jonesy's family cancer heartache

A string of famous male celebrities are set to strip down tonight, as they raise awareness for men’s health issues during Channel Seven’s The Real Full Monty.

For radio personality Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones, being part of the show is more than just a bit of fun, as he remembers his late father, Geoffrey, who battled prostate cancer.

Speaking to Be, the 50-year-old WSFM breakfast presenter says he’s sure his dad would be proud of his involvement in the show, as he encourages other men to get regular check-ups.

“He had the prostate cancer and he got his checks regularly,” Jonesy tells Be.

“He probably got onto it a bit too late though as far as getting the tests done. So really you should be getting it when you’re 40, so I started getting my tests done when I was 40.”

After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in his sixties, Jonesy’s father was then diagnosed with another serious illness.

“He got lung cancer five years after that which actually killed him but that wasn’t because of the prostate,” says Jonesy.

“He was just very unlucky to get two different cancers. Prostate cancer is one thing, lung cancer is a different kettle of fish. Had he not got the lung cancer, he’d be still with us now.”

It’s been almost four years since Jonesy’s father died in September 2014 at the age of 71, and while he’s not here, the radio star is sure his dad would be a fan of his involvement with The Real Full Monty.

“The old man… I think he’d be into it. I think he’d like it,” says Jonesy.

“When I was on Dancing With The Stars, he was very supportive of that even though I couldn’t dance a step.

“I’m pretty sure the old man, he’d be watching down and going, ‘Yeah you tried your best’.”

Jonesy filmed the show at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre earlier this year alongside the likes of Kris Smith, Shane Jacobson, Matt Cooper, Jett Kenny, Campbell Brown, Sam Mac, Brian Taylor and Todd McKenney.

“We did it and it’s done but now the new anxiety is, ‘Oh right, people are actually going to see it’,” Jonesy laughs.

“We got a spray tan, that was about it. Campbell Brown, I don’t want to embarrass him but he fully shaved down which is a bit alarming,” he then reveals of some cheeky behind-the-scenes action.

“I stood next to Shane [Jacobson] so I wouldn’t look so bad,” he jokes.

The Real Full Monty will air on Sunday July 29 at 7pm on Channel Seven.
