The reason Meghan Markle may have to return her birthday gifts

It’s no secret being a part of the British royal family comes with a whole host of benefits, but as we’ve seen time and time again there are plenty of drawbacks too.

This past Saturday Meghan Markle celebrated her 37th birthday and we’ve got our bets on that she received a lot of gifts, of course from family and friends, but also royal well-wishers.

However the Duchess of Sussex may very well have to return the majority of the gifts, according to The Mirror.

As with anything when it comes to being a royal, there are hoops to jump through and the same comes with accepting gifts, as per the royal family guidelines.

“The fundamental principle governing the acceptance of gifts by Members of The Royal Family is that no gifts, including hospitality or services, should be accepted which would, or might appear to, place the Member of The Royal Family under any obligation to the donor,” the guidelines state.

If Meghan received any gifts from royal fans and well-wishers, she may have to return them especially if there are any concerns about the motives of the senders.

The same goes for brands and businesses who may have given her anything for her birthday. For example, gifts from fashion designers are normally sent back.

However, Meghan would’ve been allowed to accept anything in one of three categories: flowers or food, books from authors (as long as it’s not too controversial) and anything costing under $260 (£150).

Regardless, we hope Prince Harry got her something good, surely she won’t have to return his gift?
