Rebecca Gibney slams Melissa George trolls

Rebecca Gibney knows domestic violence first hand. She and her sister grew up in fear of their violent, alcoholic father who regularly lashed out at their mother.

So when she saw fellow Australian actress Melissa George coping backlash online for speaking out about her experience with a violent former partner, she stepped in.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Gibney threw her support behind the former Home and Away star and hit out at those making cruel digs at her.

“I have been really disturbed by the reports of the online response to Melissa's interview. That somehow she deserved what happened to her,” Gibney writes.

“As a victim of domestic violence myself - I grew up in a household where violence toward our mother was a common occurrence - I am appalled that anyone can accuse a woman of 'asking' to be beaten.

“Domestic violence is wrong - violence in any form is wrong.”

The former Packed to the Rafters star adds that regardless of what people may think of George, she deserves compassion for what she’s been through.

“Please let us remember how difficult it is for anyone that has been in this situation to speak out,” she says.

“Regardless of how you may perceive someone in the public eye please remember they are as human as the rest of us and deserve as much compassion as the next person.”

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Night, a tearful George, 40, accused her former partner Jean-David Blanc, of slamming her head against a metal coat rack.

She claims she was left with bruising on her face, a broken inner lip and swelling to the eyes.

While her claims were shocking, the response to her interview online has been mixed, with some people on social media taking the opportunity to personally attack George.
