Relaxation Smells Like...

"Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn't you -- all of the expectations, all of the beliefs -- and becoming who you are." -Rachel Remen

A 2005 [ Chicago Tribune article] discussed how every human being has an average of 30 genes, that if triggered, could lead to disease. Stress is the number 1 trigger. For these genes to remain dormant, it's so important to have a handle on the stress in your life. There's nothing better to relieve stress than a moment in your day of complete and total surrender. Just one moment where you're able to lie down and let go of the fears, the worries, the goals. You'd be amazed how quickly the body's natural healing processes are set into motion... so long as you carve out that daily moment. Joseph Campbell describes the importance of having this "moment" in your day:

"This is an absolute necessity for anybody today. You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don't know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don't know who your friends are, you don't know what you owe anybody, you don't know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be."

These are some rituals I recommend for creating a daily "moment" to let go, unwind, and heal.

  1. Rub some Lavender oil on the arms and hands. The lavender flower, when distilled as a pure essential oil, can perform wonders on stress.
  1. Find a spot with no electronic gadgets, no clocks, no cell phones.''

Interestingly enough, Dr. Andrew Weil has gone so far as to suggest that a wind up alarm clock is healthier than one that creates an electromagnetic field so close to one's head as she sleeps.

  1. Put on some good reggae music whose uplifting message and soothing beats do a number on stress.

"One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain." -Bob Marley''
