Richard Wilkins opens up about son who has Down Syndrome

Richard Wilkins has opened up about becoming a father at 18 and spoken about his eldest son who has Down Syndrome.

Speaking on 9Honey’s Super Mums podcast on Thursday, the presenter discussed his children and fatherhood.

He first became a father when he was 18-years-old and actually “got lucky” for the first time on his 18th birthday!

“It was a 16-year-old girl who I didn’t know very well and she fell pregnant… so we got married of course,” the 63-year-old admitted on the podcast.

His first child, Adam, has down syndrome and Richard did admit he “didn’t quite know how to handle” it all at first but now calls his eldest son his “rock”.

“People often say, ‘What’s the great thing you’ve ever done” and I always say the greatest thing in my life are my children – bar none. I love, love, love them so much,” Richard said on the podcast.

The New Zealand native also has four other children – Rebecca, Nick, Christian and Estella.
