Royal family to celebrate first same-sex marriage

It’s turning out to be a bumper year for royal weddings, with another couple just announcing they’re about to tie the knot.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said ‘I do’ in May, Princess Eugenie is set to walk down the aisle in October and now the royals are set to celebrate the first same-sex marriage in the family.

The Queen’s cousin, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, has announced that he will marry his partner, James Coyle, in a chapel in Devon, later this year.

Lord Ivar came out in 2016, after divorcing his wife of 16 years and the mother of his three daughters, Lady Penny Mountbatten, in 2011.

She is now set to walk her ex-husband down the aisle later this year, when he marries his fiancé, James, after all three formed a strong friendship since the divorce.

Lord Ivar and James met in 2014 while they were both on ski holiday in the Swiss ski resort, Verbier.

James is said to have mistaken Lord Ivar for a ski instructor and shouted out at him, which was the start of their beautiful relationship.

Later that year, Lord Ivar gave an interview to the Daily Mail, where he spoke about coming out and said that his ex-wife, Lady Penny, knew about his bisexuality before they married.

He went on to say that they tried to make their marriage worked but in the end, Penny ‘did not feel sufficiently loved’.

Speaking about his younger years, Lord Ivar said that he knew he was bisexual but ‘it was known as ‘the love that dare not speak its name’.

“I was driven into the closet by not wanting to come to terms with who I was and facing friends and family in the early years. I buried it.”

“Being a Mountbatten was never the problem, it was the generation into which I was born.”

Lord Ivar is now extremely happy with his fiancé, James, and said they can’t wait to grow old together.
