Ruby Rose deletes Twitter amid backlash over lesbian superhero role

Australian actress Ruby Rose has deleted her Twitter account after facing a wave of backlash for her new superhero role.

Last week it was announced the 32-year-old has been cast as the first lesbian Batwoman in CW’s adaptation of the comic book series, but many fans have since taken to social media saying Ruby can’t play a lesbian character because she’s not a lesbian herself. The thing is, she is.

According to Syfy, Ruby’s final tweet before she shut down her Twitter account addressed this backlash, and clarified she’d been open about her sexuality for many years.

“Where on earth did “Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman” come from – has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read,” she tweeted.

“I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with “she’s too gay” how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.”

Many fans have since thrown their support behind The Meg star, saying she shouldn’t have had to face this sort of ‘hate’.

“Really makes me sad for her, she was always so sweet and kind-hearted, interacting with her fans here, she made us all laugh and we shared great times with Ruby!” one fan tweeted.

“I feel so sorry that she quit Twitter because of haters She deserves peace and happiness (sic).”

“Hopefully once she struts her stuff and proves them wrong all the haters will dissipate,” another tweeted.

Last week Ruby opened up about her exciting new superhero role during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“I feel like the reason I get so emotional, growing up watching TV, I never saw somebody on TV that I could identify with, let alone a superhero,” said the Pitch Perfect star.

“I have always had this saying — I mean, not me, Oscar Wilde — which is be yourself because everyone else is taken. So I always live by that motto, and the second motto when I came into the industry was be the person that you needed when you were younger. I feel like one motto led to another.”

Ruby’s Instagram account is still up and running, but with a restriction on comments.
