Sam Mac suggests Today show replacement

After Australia's media was left in shock by Lisa Wilkinson's decision to jump ship from Channel Nine to Channel Ten, an unlikely contender has put their hand up to fill in her seat on the Today show.

Sam Mac, who presents the weather on rival counterpart Sunrise, has suggested Siri take the role left vacant by the 57-year-old. Yep, that's right, the iPhone App Siri. Watch Siri's job application in the clip above.

While doing a cross to hosts Samantha Armytage and David 'Kochie' Koch, Sam poked a bit of fun at the situation on the rival network and suggested he had an idea on Lisa's replacement.

"What did you want to say Siri?" the TV personality said before holding up his iPhone.

"I am available for any breakfast TV hosting gigs," Siri, who is described as an "intelligent personal assistant" by Apple, could be heard saying.

"How exciting is that? She's officially putting her hand up to say if there's gigs going anywhere in Australia, Siri could be our next co-host," Sam said before taking a slight dig adding: "I put my hand up and say 'Yep I vote for Siri.' She's very talented and cheap!"

Back in the studio Sam and Kochie could be seen laughing, before Kochie jokingly added that Siri isn't needed at the Sunrise Martin Place studios but "down the road".

Of course while Siri might not be an actual contender for the Today show gig, attention now turns to who will replace Lisa in one of the most coveted jobs in TV.

While Channel Nine newsreader Deborah Knight stepped in for Lisa on Tuesday, rumours are rife the permanent replacement will in fact be current Today newsreader Sylvia Jeffreys.

After a decade-long stint co-hosting the show, Lisa announced on Monday night she would be leaving the network immediately for a new role with Channel Ten and The Project.

Her exit from the network after 10 years comes after speculation surrounding her salary expectations, with reports Lisa demanded the same pay as co-host Karl.

Channel Nine released a statement saying: "Nine today confirmed we have been unable to meet the expectations of Lisa Wilkinson and her manager on a contract renewal for a further period.

"We express our gratitude for Lisa for her 10 years with the Today Show are disappointed we find ourselves in this position. Nine will be going in another direction and will be considering our options in coming weeks and months."
