Scuba Diver Gets Up Close and Personal With Majestic Pufferfish

Scuba diver PT Hirschfield was given the opportunity of a lifetime when a friendly pufferfish showed no hesitation in introducing themselves. The pair swam the depths of the Morning Peninsula together in Melbourne, Australia.

Speaking to Storyful, PT said: “This gorgeous globefish (aka pufferfish) approached me during a recent dive at Rye Pier on Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay. While we had fun doing video selfies together for around 10 minutes, there is also a sad side to this story. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer. And while this adorable fish looks like Rapunzel with a golden braid, in reality, its long ‘hair’ is a parasite which means the fish’s health is also threatened. Perhaps the fish thought I might be able to help it, or maybe it just sensed a kindred spirit? Either way, we enjoyed each other’s company!”
