Sharon Osbourne has spoken out about the abuse her former co-star Mel B suffered while they were filming X Factor UK.

Appearing on The Talk this week, Sharon recounted her horror at seeing the former Spice Girl covered in bruises.

“Three years ago, in the final two days of X Factor, she didn't make the first day and she was in the hospital,” Sharon explained.

“It was reported in all the papers that said 'allegedly' she's been beaten by her husband.

“And she came back for the final day and she had a black eye and bruising everywhere, but she made the final.”

The reality star went on to refer to Mel’s decade-long marriage to Stephen Belafonte, which was brought to an end last month after Mel filed for divorce.

“In the situation that she's been in for 10 years, it's not just physical, it's mental abuse too,” she said.

“This has been brewing and people talking for a very, very long time.”

Her words come after Mel took out a temporary restraining order against her estranged husband, with court documents claiming that he'd beat her, got their nanny pregnant and forced her to have threesomes.

She alleged the abuse started within the first year of their marriage in 2007, and became a "pattern" for the then-couple with Stephen allegedly choosing to "beat her down to let her know he was in charge" whenever she saw a spike in her career.

For his part, Stephen has stringently denied claims of domestic violence, and a statement from his lawyers published in TMZ this week said, “It's a shame that Ms. Brown elected not to proceed in a respectful and amicable fashion in this very private matter.

“In due course, Mr. Belafonte will be filing his response to the outrageous and unfounded allegations made by Ms. Brown, which allegations he vehemently denies.

"When the Court determines the truth, it will become clear that this entire charade was nothing more than a smear campaign intended to cover up Ms. Brown's own conduct during the marriage in light of her current involvement with a family television show, and in an effort to unfairly gain leverage both financially and with respect to custody of the children.”
