Troubled singer Sinead O’Connor has revealed what she believes to be the source of her emotional pain – her mother.

Speaking to Dr Phil, the 50-year-old discussed the abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of her mother, Marie O'Connor, who she claims was “possessed”.

“She was not well; she was really very, very, very not well. I would say she was possessed although I’m not sure I believe in such things,” Sinead told the TV doctor.

“She ran a torture chamber, it was a torture chamber. She was a person who would smile and delight when she was hurting you.”

The singer, who has been battling depression for several years, added that her mother would make her say, “I am nothing, I am nothing” while she beat her.

According to Sinead the abuse continued until she was 13, at which point she decided to run away from home.

Sinead's mother died in a car crash when the singer was just 19 years old.

During the far reaching interview Sinead also touched upon her recent hospitalisation after posting a confronting video to Facebook in which she claimed she was suicidal.

“What happened was I had been writing to my family begging – letters, and angry letters, and raging. I don’t want to make out like I’m a victim here, I give as good, as I get. I thought it might be better if my family, if they saw how I’m feeling they would relate to it.”

The video ended up catching the attention of authorities who did a welfare check on the singer who was staying in a New Jersey Travelodge at the time.

Not long after authorities visited Sinead a post appeared on her Facebook page letting fans know that the singer was “safe” and “not suicidal”.

It read: “She is surrounded by love and receiving the best of care”.
