Why you should NEVER wear a hairband on your wrist

Most of us wear a hairband on our wrist at all times. After all, there’s nothing worse than being caught in gale force winds with nothing to tie your luscious locks up with.

But did you know that a hairband could be the cause of your death?

It may sound dramatic but one woman had a scary experience after her hairband gave her a nasty infection.

Just like the rest of us, Audree Kopp regularly wore a hairband around her wrist. One day, she noticed a bump growing on her wrist but just assumed it was a spider bite.

After it didn’t go away, Kopp went to see her doctor who immediately prescribed her a course of antibiotics. The bump still continued to grow and Kopp was forced to have surgery to remove the large abscess.

Dr Amit Gupta, Kopp’s doctor, believes that bacteria from her hairband had caused an infection by seeping through her pores and hair follicles.

That’s right. No open wound was needed here.

“It could have been a whole different ball game,” Dr Gupta commented. “Once it gets into your bloodstream, people have been known to go into a coma, your body shuts down. It could have been worse.”

If that doesn’t make you throw away every hairband you own, we don’t know what will.

Medical professionals do have some advice regarding the wearing of hairbands. They say that they should be worn loosely around wrists if necessary and should be removed and cleaned as often as possible.
