When you buy an Oscar de la Renta wedding gown, the last place you expect it to end up is in the dump yard.

But that's exactly what happened to one New York bride's breathtaking dress when the stunning creation was accidentally thrown away after her wedding.

The bride gave the dress to her mother, Lucinda Ballard, after her nuptials in the hope that it would be kept safe and sound.

Lucinda was shattered after the big day and handed the gown over to building staff in her apartment complex, who mistook the word 'dress' for 'trash' and proceeded to throw it in the rubbish bin.

When they both realised what had happened, Lucinda said she was "horrified" but it was “a totally understandable, forgivable human error,” according to the New York Post.

Within minutes building staff contacted the New York Sanitation Department who told them to get to the dump as soon as possible.

Lucinda and members of staff spent up to an hour searching through mounds of dirt from the truck before they eventually located the dress.

While the dress didn't have a scratch on it, we're sure Lucinda is pretty traumatised from the adventure.
