The fashion item Melania and Ivanka are getting slammed for

As First Lady and First Daughter, Melania and Ivanka Trump are very much in the public eye – and so are their fashion choices.

But while people love to froth over the hefty price tags that come with many of their designer outfits, there’s something else about their wardrobes that has been gaining attention recently.

The pair’s choice to almost exclusively wear high heels has been heavily criticised by an article in Newsweek which said it is a “Symbol of Everything That Is Beautiful and Horrifying About Them”.

Their point was that the high heel – which is the staple shoe of beauty pageants like the one the President used to run – isn’t something practical or comfortable that the majority of average women are able to wear all day long.

Instead, it’s a fashion item that is designed to draw the male gaze, despite being wildly uncomfortable (and potentially damaging) for the wearer.

It’s certainly an interesting point, particularly because other high profile women such as Kate Middleton and former First Lady Michelle Obama, are regularly pictured in flat shoes.

It’s also true however, that both those women are seen more often in heels, particularly when attending official and public events. Plus we shouldn't forget that women are already shamed enough for what they choose to wear.

Plenty of people have taken to social media to say how much they disagree with the criticism levelled at the Trump women.

One said, "The Trump women can't wear SHOES without them being used as a political weapons against them," while another wrote, "How dare Newsweek. Some of us love our heels we wear them because we love how they look. Whats the problem?"
