Melania Trump upstaged by staffer during Japan tour

While Melania Trump looked stunning attending a state banquet in Japan with husband Donald this week, the first lady didn’t win the gong for best fashion on the night.

Melania looked glamorous in a traditional floor-length red gown with short sleeves, and opted for a new sort of hairstyle, ditching her custom bouncy blowout.

Instead her hair was pinned back in an elegant chignon bun, with a few loose strands that exuded effortless polish. It’s a look we haven’t seen from the FLOTUS since January.

However, despite the new do, Melania was well outdone on the fashion stage by White House communications director Hope Hicks, who is also on the tour.

Hope took a completely different approach to the black-tie dress code and definitely stood out from the crowd.

Wearing a black tuxedo with a white shirt and large black bowtie, the 29-year-old staffer spiced things up with this unique look.

Both women are travelling with the President of the United States on his 12-day trip around Asia, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hosted the banquet at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace to welcome Trump.

Before dinner Melania also enjoyed a day back at school, trying her hand at some Japanese calligraphy at a Tokyo primary school.

Together with her Japanese counterpart Akie Abe, Melania visited the Kyobashi Tsukiji school, where 300 children welcomed them with a song.
