The bizarre Spring Racing hat trends

The races this year has brought out a wave of fashionable ladies to the trackside.

And the millinery trends that seemed to be taking over The Birdcage over the course of the season was the turban and the bonnet.

Model Robyn Lawley, Kate Waterhouse, Today Show weather presenter Natalia Cooper and Emma Freedman all sported a turban design and totally killed it.

Preferring the more classic look, models Niki Phillips and Kate Peck and actress Melissa George all went for a simple bonnet.

TV and radio presenter, Freedman, was dressed to impress in a purple Three Floor halterneck dress on Melbourne Cup Day.

However, it was her impressive Sylvy Earl turban we were looking at, which matched her dress perfectly.

Racing royalty Kate Waterhouse predicted the trend at the beginning of October and she made sure she was rocking one of the most dazzling turbans on the day.

When asked by Elle magazine what she thought would be the biggest trackside trends this year, Waterhouse predicted them all perfectly.

“Bright colours, flowy florals and textured prints,” she answered.

“You will also see metallic turban-style headpieces and a lot more hats this Sydney Spring Carnival season – from smaller boaters, to large brim hats.”

Glamorous Hollywood women have been sporting the turban look for years, with stars like Greta Garbo and more recently Jennifer Lopez and Eva Mendes rocking the look.

Also wearing a turban warp headband at the Melbourne Cup was Today Show weather presenter Natalia Cooper, who went for a striking red version.

Sports Illustrated model Robyn Lawley also chose a black turban to go with her red and black plunging dress on the day.

She matched it with a pair of black cage shoes and a simple black clutch bag.

Meanwhile, Aussie actress Melissa George was all about the bonnet hat when she arrived at Derby Day last weekend.

The custom-made Millinery Jill design went perfectly with her bizarre black and white Jason Grech dress.

For the Melbourne Cup, Kate Peck went for a classic Nerida Winter bonnet, matched with a Moss & Spy dress.
