If you think you’re in the clear because you apply deodorant religiously, an expert has dropped some bombshell tips that might make you re-think your daily routine.

Embarrassing Bodies regular Dr Dawn Harper has revealed there’s some tricks to making your deodorant work for you, and the one that shocked us the most is the ideal time we should be putting it on.

"Apply at night before going to bed to allow to dry fully,” Dr Harper tells Cosmopolitan. “Leave on overnight and wash off any residue in the morning with soap and water.”

Forget spraying before you sprint out the front door, apparently applying at night helps it be fully absorbed for maximum protection.

Another interesting, and slightly worrying tip? Daily application of deodorant is not necessarily the best, with Dr Harper insisting we should only be using it “once or twice a week”.

"Apply 2 strokes up and 2 strokes down to each armpit,” she explains, adding that after a shower is the worst time to put it on.

"To get the best results you apply deodorant to completely dry skin."
