The Crown star heard about royal engagement 'quite early on'

The Crown star Vanessa Kirby has revealed there are definitely a few perks of playing Queen Elizabeth II's sister Princess Margaret.

The actress told Be exclusively that one major benefit was she heard whispers of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement "quite early on".

"There we a lot of rumours," Vanessa said. "People spoke to me about the rumours quite early on because of The Crown."

The royal family has certainly come full circle during the Queen's 65-year reign after the most recent royal engagement was announced.

Princess Margaret was banned from marrying her divorced love Peter Townsend due to the Church of England's teachings but it seems happiness now trumps protocol as Harry is set to tie the knot with divorcee Meghan in May 2018.

The 29-year-old revealed how she thinks Princess Margaret "never recovered" from her father, King George VI's death, not being allowed to marry the man she loved and being forced to live in her elder sister's shadow her entire life.

"I think she never recovered from it," she admitted. "If anyone says to their sister, 'Oh I'm papa's favourite' there's definitely a wound there that hasn't been healed properly."

"She was also quite alone in her grief and Peter Townsend definitely became a comfort in her grief," Vanessa continued. "Therefore that bond was a subconscious father replacement, I felt. So, the tragedy of having that taken away from her left her more unstable than ever."

Vanessa also discussed how lucky she felt to be able to explore the extremely vulnerable side of Princess Margaret in the upcoming season.

"I felt even luckier really in the sense I got to go deeper with her this season and get into her psyche more and you’re with her much more," she told Be. "We really see her emotional journey and her darkness."

Despite exploring some deeply personal aspects of the royal family throughout the last 60 years the star revealed that the Queen is apparently a closet fan of the show.

"We've heard the Queen watched [the show] and quite liked it," Vanessa said.

However, the Duke of Edinburgh wasn't quite the same.

"Philip didn't want to watch it because he couldn't be bothered," she said.

Season two of The Crown premieres on Netflix on December 8.
