The ONE word Ellen wasn’t allowed to say on her show

You’d think having her own show with her own name in it Ellen DeGeneres could do and say as she pleased.

Obviously no swearing or crude behaviour but besides that you’d assume Ellen would have free reign to do what she wanted on her own talk show.

Turns out in the early days of The Ellen DeGeneres Show there was one word that Ellen wasn’t allowed to say and that was the word “we”.

What was it about the simple word “we” that made her producers so nervous?

It apparently had to do with the fact that she likes women. WHAT?!

“I remember there was something that happened to my finger, and I was in a relationship and I was going to say ‘we,’ and they wouldn’t let me say ‘we’ [on camera] because somebody would all of a sudden picture a woman in my life,” Ellen explained on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show.

At the time Ellen’s sexuality was a precarious subject after she came out in “The Puppy Episode” on her sitcom Ellen in 1997.

Her sitcom was subsequently cancelled in 1998 but three years later NBC picked up her now highly successful talk show.

However, it wasn’t a walk in the park for the show to get picked up.

“This was a show nobody wanted to buy,” she also said to Ryan Seacrest. “They really didn’t think anyone would watch a lesbian during the day and, at the time, no one wanted to see a lesbian at night either. So I was really out of options.”

She continued: “It felt horrible [about hiding my relationship] because I had worked so hard to be truthful and to come to terms with my shame of hiding something I knew was no wrong, but society was telling me it was wrong.”

“It’s a hard balance. I know this is a business, and I know that I have to appeal to everyone, but I think what’s more appealing than anything is honesty,” Ellen said.

Well said, Ellen!

Her show is now heading its 15th season and is as successful as ever.
