Here's how often you should be buying new underwear

If you aren’t replacing your underwear every year then you need to start doing it now.

The Good Housekeeping Institute has revealed that despite regular washing in hot water, a person’s clean underwear can still contain up to 10,000 living bacteria.

As such throwing your knickers out at least once a year is crucial for health reasons like reducing your risk of urinary tract infections, thrush and other allergies.

A recent study in the UK revealed that one in four men wear their underwear for two days before washing.

But even more shocking, a survey conducted in the US discovered that 18 per cent of men and 10.5 per cent of women didn’t wash their underwear at all.

According to MSN, 18 to 24-year-olds were the most hygienic cleaners.

“It turns out there are quite a few washing avoiders out there. These dirty habits are helping bacteria thrive,” the GHI stated.

The GHI also reminded everyone that just as important as washing your underwear in a hot cycle, was making sure your washing machine is clean.

Failure to do so actually allows bugs such as E. coli – found in human faeces - and dust mites to thrive.

An examination by a UK cleaning company found that in just two tablespoons of used washing machine water there is up to one million bacteria.
