Thomas Markle reveals how Harry asked permission to marry Meghan

He missed out on walking his daughter down the aisle due to health issues, but Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, has spoken out about the moment his son-in-law, Prince Harry, asked him for his daughter’s hand in marriage.

The 73-year-old former lighting director, who moved to Mexico after filing for bankruptcy, appeared on Good Morning Britain to talk about the phone call he had with the royal.

And revealed he had one crucial condition for Harry before he said yes.

“Harry asked for her hand on the phone and I said: ‘You are a gentleman, promise me you will never raise your hand against my daughter and of course I will grant you my permission’,” he said.

During the segment, Thomas said he “absolutely wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle,” but he was recovering from heart surgery.

Just hours after revealing he wouldn’t be at the wedding back in May, Thomas was then admitted to hospital for heart surgery, where he reportedly had three stents placed in his blood vessels after suffering a heart attack.

Meghan’s father-in-law, Prince Charles, stepped in to take over Thomas’ duties and ended up walking Meghan down the aisle.

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, was the only member of her family in attendance on the day.

It’s previously been reported that Prince Harry and Thomas have a good relationship and this was confirmed by the Duchess of Sussex’s dad in his interview.

He claimed Prince Harry is an interesting guy and when he expressed his dislike for Donald Trump, he told him to give Trump a chance.

It was previously reported that 33-year-old prince, who claimed that the royals were the ‘family she’s never had’ in a BBC Radio 4 show over Christmas, is said to have won Meghan’s 73-year-old father over with his kind personality.

“Tom thinks he’s a great guy,” an insider told Woman’s Day.

“He is well aware he’s not usually the type to her invited to events like this, given he’s fled bankruptcy in the US and is hiding out in Mexico, but nothing is going to stop him watching his little princess become a real-life royal.”
