Tim Minchin’s Cardinal Pell song goes viral after sexual abuse charges against priest

The song was highly controversial when it was released last year in the midst of the investigation to accusations of sexual abuse linked to Cardinal George Pell and now the Tim Minchin track has gone viral again because the priest is now actually coming home.

The singer wrote Come Home (Cardinal Pell) after the 74-year-old appeared via video link from Italy during investigations by the Royal Commissioner last year instead of returning to Australia.

In the song Tim refers to Pell as a “coward”, “scum” and “buffoon” and some of the lyrics also read, “And years later, when survivors/ Despite their shame and their fear/ Stood up to tell their stories”.

Many took to social media to note how what Tim sings in his song is now coming true as Pell is returning home to face the music, literally.

This morning Victoria Police charged Pell with several offences of historic sexual abuse.

In a statement also released today, it was confirmed Cardinal Pell would be returning “as soon as possible, to clear his name”, subject to medical advice, to the face charges against him which he “vigorously” denies.
