Why Tom Williams won't be replacing Kochie any time soon
While many television presenters would jump at the opportunity to host a successful breakfast television show, Tom Williams says he has no intention of taking Kochie’s spot on Channel Seven’s Sunrise if the opportunity arose.
Speaking to Be, the 47-year-old says he’s content hosting the network’s afternoon program, The Daily Edition, a job that’s been keeping him busy for the past five years.
“I’m very happy at The Daily Edition,” he says. “It’s a great show and it’s a live show. We have a fantastic team working around it and Sally [Obermeder] and I are a great combination.
“It’s been going for over five years now so in TV that’s a pretty big deal,” he continues.
Tom shares two daughters, Storm, four, and Sloane, two, with fashion designer wife Rachel Gilbert, and says the flexibility surrounding his working hours is a major benefit of his current role.
“I do a lot of caring in the morning and the afternoon,” explains the TV star.
“It allows me to do drops and pick them up and take them to the park in the afternoon and get things prepared for when Rachel gets home.
“That’s a great luxury I think a lot of dads don’t get. I feel quite privileged to be able to do that.”
Tom has been co-hosting The Daily Edition since 2013, and doesn’t see it going anywhere any time soon.
Meanwhile Channel Seven’s breakfast show Sunrise is currently hosted by Samantha Armytage and David ‘Kochie’ Koch.
Last year there were reports Kochie was looking at stepping down from the highly sought after presenting gig after 15 years, but he later came out and told The Daily Telegraph, “I can definitely say I am around for a bit longer”.
Meanwhile in between hosting The Daily Edition and spending time with his family, Tom has been spending the past few weeks training hard for this weekend’s City2Surf as an ambassador for Westpac.
“I’ve been averaging about 20 to 25 km’s per week in running,” reveals Tom.
“I’ve always been a competitor in the City2Surf and I think if I can bring a little bit of awareness to the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service and the good stuff that they do, it’s a win-win.”
