It took Nicole Trunfio's husband a long time to support her breastfeeding in public

Australian model Nicole Trunfio says it took some time for her husband to be ‘supportive’ of her decision to breastfeed in public.

The 32-year-old says Gary Clark Jr. struggled with the concept when she gave birth to son Zion in 2015, but he’s now more than comfortable with it as she breastfeeds six-month-old daughter Gia.

“He was so traditional,” Nicole tells Be, explaining her musician beau saw breastfeeding in public as “not really acceptable”.

But the model says that wasn’t going to stop her from being the kind of mother she wanted to be, and ultimately generating awareness helped change Gary’s mind.

Back in 2015 Nicole posed on the cover of Elle Australia while breastfeeding her son Zion, a bold professional and personal move, that sparked further conversation about normalising breastfeeding.

“That was a huge pivotal moment,” Nicole says, revealing her husband “seeing how many people it touched and how many people joined that kind of movement” helped him understand how it could be accepted.

“People [were] like thanking me and coming up to me in restaurants and thanking me for that cover, because it really opened up the conversation with them and their partner or just made them feel, ‘I’m not the only one that feels that this should be normal’.”

“He is 100% supportive of it now,” says Nicole. “I think the conversation just needed to begin somewhere.”

The US-based model has come to Australia this week, returning to work for the first time since giving birth to daughter Gia in January this year.

While shooting for her new gig as the Face of Chadstone – The Fashion Capital’s Spring/Summer 18 campaign, Nicole has been breastfeeding on set in between takes.

“Obviously I’m breastfeeding right now so they were really supportive with me having her on set and giving me any time that I needed,” she explains.

“I thought just being a mother was where I was at but it’s incredible to be a woman in the world and being able to do both.”

And while she’ll no doubt appear glamorous in the new campaign launching next month, Nicole emphasises pregnancy and giving birth is far from that.

“It changes your relationship with your body,” she tells Be. “I’m going to be real, it’s not what it looks like on the outside.

“I don’t think there’s any woman on the face of the planet that has a baby and is like, ‘Yeah I look amazing’. There’s definitely retouching and makeup and all these things that definitely help us.”
