Looking more five-star hotel than inner-city train station, Saudi Arabia’s capital of Riyadh is to build the world’s most luxurious transport system.
The space age design by London-based Zaha Hadid Architects will feature marbled walkways, glittering gold-plated walls and, a must in the region, air conditioning.
Said to be inspired by the sweeping curves of Saudi Arabia’s sand dunes, the façade will let light in while keeping out the harsh desert sun.
The 20,434 square metre metro station will serve as a key interchange on the network, as well as having access to a local monorail accessed from a skybridge.
While the station is impressive, it’s the construction time frame that is really amazing.
The ruling King Abdullah has ordered the new six-line network be completed in just four years - the same time it took builders to renovate one station in New York.
What do you think of the design?
