Bolt smashes hole in plane window

Seeing the outer pane of your plane window break is not an encouraging sight for a traveller.

But that’s exactly what happened to a passenger on an Air Canada flight.

The man posted about the experience on Reddit under the user name Skips_LegDay.

“So about halfway through my flight I heard a loud pop, looked out my window at a bolt that flew off the prop and broke through the outer pane,” he wrote.

In the comments thread, the man said that passengers around him heard the bolt, which was identified as a spinner bolt, smash the glass and seemed nervous when they realised what had happened.

“I got up and went to the stewardess and quietly told her what happened, she came over to see it then called the pilot. He said it will be fine until we land as the cabin's pressurised.

“Once we landed and people stopped snapping pics, the pilot talked to me for a while. Said he's never seen this happen in over 25 years of flying.”

Spinners are fairing fitted over propeller hubs to make the aircraft more streamlined.

The passenger was worried that another bolt might detach and smash through the inner pane.

“Definitely sucked myself deep into the chair for the rest of the flight. Good thing my sphincter is functioning properly as well,” he quipped.

After landing, Skips_LegDay posted that he was getting drunk in Vancouver Airport before catching another flight on the same model of plane.
