Quaterman explains to Yahoo Sport that often the favelas don't have enough running water, the electricity cuts out and there is often sewerage running through the streets, however the people who live there are happy and "the community is amazing".

"I know I'm not Brazilian but I've lived here for five years and we know the secret places that you won't ever find if you stay in a hotel," he said.

Isis went on to claim that they use Airbnb when they travel and it's much better for getting a sense of the real country you're visiting.

They claim it's safer to stay there than anywhere else in Brazil.

The house, which has four-and-a-half stars on Airbnb out of 29 reviews has three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

It also features a kitchen and a modest living room and to rent one of the rooms will cost between $15-$30 a night.

However while people may think it's dangerous to stay in a house in a favela in Brazil, Matthew says he's never had a problem filling the rooms.

"I didn't feel unsafe there, I really didn't", he said about living in the house.

"I lived in two different favelas for six months but I never had any problems and I know people who have been robbed all over Rio outside of favelas but inside favelas they don't rob each other.

"You might get robbed by someone from the favela on the beach but inside the favela no one robs anybody.

"You can walk there at night as a woman, no problem, it's one of the safest places to stay."

His partner Isis then said that it's safer to stay in a favela that it is on the streets of Copacabana, which they claim people don't realise.
