Humpback whales breaching next to kayakers is incredible

Kayakers and sail boats in British Columbia, Canada, experienced the closest whale encounter of their lives while out at sea.

Despite the rule that whale watchers can’t get closer than 100 metres to the giant mammals, there’s not much one can do to stop a mother humpback whale and her calf from breaching right next to onlookers.

Heather Lawrence’s incredible video was uploaded to YouTube and shows numerous whales breaching from various angles near Penn Island.

Lawrence and her friends were kayaking alongside other whale watching boats, observing a mother whale nursing her calf from a safe distance.

As the marine mammals finished up, they dove down and the tourists thought that was it, but little did they know they would then receive the most unforgettable show.

“What happened next took everyone by surprise,” Wildcoast Adventures captioned the jaw-dropping footage.

Then the baby whale copies mum and gives the onlookers a stunning show. But it only gets better.

After a few more close encounters, Lawrence is filming the baby, when seconds later, the massive mother jumps literally right next to the kayakers, taking up the entire view of the camera.

The video then blacks out and gets shaken around, while the kayakers hold onto their boats for dear life, unsure if the mother will leap on top of them next.

"It was really exhilarating. She's huge and that's all that you're seeing. She takes up the whole view," Lawrence told CBC News.

“Luckily it all went well and we had a huge thrill,” she said.
