New Zealanders are Australia’s most unhappy expats

Most foreigners who come to live temporarily or permanently in Australia, say it’s a pretty cool place and that the people are some of the most friendly they’ve ever come across.

However, our New Zealand neighbours don’t quite agree, and according to a new report, they’re the most unhappy with Aussie life than any other immigrants.

It’s not because we stole pavlova from them or tease them about the way they pronounce ‘six,’ but the surprising report released by the Scanlon Foundation and Monash University, found Kiwis were the expats that felt the most discriminated against in Australia.

The Australians Today survey asked 10,000 immigrant nationals about their experiences of Australian life and almost 30 per cent of Kiwis described their experience in Oz as negative.

According to a 2015 survey, 634,560 New Zealand nationals currently live in Australia and it's sad to think that 46 per cent of our Kiwi mates say they don’t feel they belong in Australia and 17 per cent are extremely dissatisfied with their life here.

The report also found New Zealanders distrust Australian politicians and government institutions more than any other nationality.

Report author Andrew Markus told AAP that while Kiwis do well economically, they feel hard done by because they don’t get the same access to government benefits like other immigrants do.

"If an Australian goes to New Zealand they get full rights but they (New Zealanders) come here and they don't get full rights," Markus said.

Despite suffering from a high level of discrimination, the report states it is mostly verbal and they don’t experience physical assault.

And while Sydney was voted in as the world’s second most friendliest city (two places in front of Queenstown, New Zealand,) according to a Kiwi who worked on the report, unfortunately New Zealand nationals don't seem to thinks so.
