Paris approves plans for experimental nudist zone

If clothes are one holiday item you can live without, it’s time to book a trip to Paris, with the French capital approving plans for a nudist area in the city.

With France one of the top naturist destinations in the world, the nudist zone is said to be established from next European summer onwards in one of Paris’ two main woods: Bois de Boulogne to the west or Bois de Vincennes to the east.

"We've got two million nudists in France which is doubled during the summer with visitors," says David Belliard, co-chairman of the ecologist group in the city council.

"For them Paris is the world's premier tourist destination and there's no public place for them to go. We want to try out a recreational area where nudists can freely strip off."

Public nudity is currently forbidden in France, and attracts a whopping penalty of $22,000 and a year imprisonment. However naturist groups say having a specially designated zone would see nudists able to safely shed their clothes.

The decision has come under fire from some though.

One official has described the idea as “demented” citing the plan as provocative, especially in light of the recent controversy surrounding French mayors refusal to lift a burkini ban in the country’s coastal resorts.
