Tourists blast the most common travel misconceptions

If this Reddit thread is anything to go by, everything we thought we knew about the world's top travel destinations is all wrong.

In a new forum set up on the site, travellers have discussed the biggest misconceptions about some of the top holiday destinations around the globe and some of them may just shock you.

The question - 'what are some misconceptions about some travel destinations?' - was posted by one Reddit user and since then it's had hundreds of responses from people giving their two cents on their biggest holiday let-downs.

"For example as someone who has a Balinese grandmother and who visits the island once every few years, I don't understand why Bali is famous for its beaches. Sure there are a few decent beaches but unless you're a surfer there are much better spots to go in the rest of Indonesia and Southeast Asia," the original commenter said, asking people to share their own experiences.

You won't always find celebrities in L.A.

If you think you're in with a surefire chance of spotting your favourite star by booking a holiday to Tinseltown, apparently you can think again.

One commenter said: "If you go to LA, you're not going to see celebrities.

"You probably won't even see anything entertainment related other than billboard advertising. It's a working city."

Another L.A. local said they can't understand the lure of the city but nonetheless named out a list of places where you are actually very likely to bump into a actor or singer just going about their business.

"Chateau Marmont, Sunset Tower bar, The Grove, Gladstones, Silver Lake strip, UCB Franklin, Runyon, I mean you can go see Jeff Goldblum play piano at the Rockwell every Wednesday," they said.

"I feel really bad for anyone who goes to LA and spends their time in Hollywood--because Hollywood is s***."

French people are not all jerks

The French have a bad reputation when it comes to their attitudes to tourists, however that may just be a massive misconception that has been going on for years now.

"Parisians are curt. Many people who are not from big cities confuse that with rude. It's more just a lack of time to deal with people," one commenter said.

People said they "met very pleasant people in Paris", while others "found people in Paris to be largely friendly and helpful".
Iranis welcoming

There's a common perception of Iran as a danger zone, ravaged with war and not exactly your ideal honeymoon destination, but one commenter claims that's "simply not true".

"Everyone thinks that it's dangerous to visit Iran and that all Iranians hate Westerners - simply not true," they said.

"I never once felt I was in danger when I travelling there and most of the locals were perfectly welcoming."

Another person agreed, saying "Iranians were very hospitable and friendly" and they "wished more people would consider visiting Iran."

Not everyone gets sick in India

We've all heard of "Delhi-belly" and while this may put some people off travelling there, one traveller has claimed it's a myth.

"Spent a month there, and literally the most healthy (digestively speaking) I have ever felt," they said.

"Delhi-belly is a myth!!!"

However people commented saying "I think you got lucky" and claimed the initial commenter didn't actually understand what Delhi-belly is.

"It's not like the food itself is inherently bad for your digestive system (it isn't, and may even be better than a typical western diet) but that the food is frequently contaminated with bacteria that cause bouts of illness," they said.

"Perhaps you got lucky and avoided this for a month, but many people don't manage to. Worth noting that contamination is far worse in the hot summer months, so if you went in winter it's not so surprising that you avoided it."

Another person recommended avoiding street food "like the plague" and have "five days in Bangkok to 'harden' the digestive system beforehand".

You may not see kangaroos hopping around Australian cities

It depends where you are in Australia, but there's a common misconception among international tourists that if you fly Down Under, you'll just happen upon a kangaroo in the street.

One person said you won't find the furry creatures hopping around Sydney's CBD but another person pointed out that you may just catch a glimpse on some of the suburban streets.

" I've seen them hopping down suburban streets in Sydney, hopping down suburban streets in Canberra, and lounging in front yards in coastal towns," they said.

The same also goes for koalas, snakes, spiders and any other dangerous creatures you're hoping to spot in Australia.
