If you are a travelling selfie addict, we have good news.

A new study by HomeAway reveals snapping selfies and pics whilst on holiday makes you 40 per cent more likely to remember the trip than those who prefer to ‘live in the moment.’

It turns out, your social media channel of choice also has an impact on how well the memories are preserved with Instagram users 24 per cent more likely than Facebook users to remember their breaks clearly.

Given that recent studies have shown travellers would prefer to take their phone on holiday rather than a loved one, we must be remembering a lot!

The effects of selfie-taking are diminished if we spend more than two hours using phones and devices so it is best to limit the use to preserve those memories rather than scrolling your Facebook feed.

"Let's face it - we can't holiday every day, which is why we need great memories to keep us connected to those who matter most," said John Kim, president of HomeAway in a statement. "Every holiday is an opportunity to create great memories with the people you love. With this research, we wanted to answer the question, 'What can we do to help our travellers make their holidays even more memorable?"

The study revealed more good news for those on a budget, showing that what we spend on a holiday has no effect on how much or how well we remember it.

It should come as no surprise that we are also more likely to remember an adventure if we take all our loved ones along with us – more people to create memories with.

People who travelled with a mix of family and friends remembered their holidays at least 20 per cent better than those who travelled with just family, just friends, in a couple, or alone.

There's something to be said for getting excited about going away, as holidaymakers who reported feeling happy and excited before their holidays were 73 per cent more likely to have excellent recall of their holiday memories versus those who felt other emotions, including stress, frustration, or even calmness.
