Just a week before the official grand opening, the French resort of Val Thorens has been named the best ski resort in the world for the third time in four years.

The highest resort in Europe scored the title at the World Ski Awards held at A-ROSA in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Val Thorens is back on top after being momentarily knocked off its perch last year when the title went to Austrian ski resort Kitzbühel.

The title went to Val Thorens after an online vote from around 1.6 million snow lovers.

“Val Thorens: It’s a new world resort that combines the best of skiing with the best of atmospheres,” reads the World Ski Awards website.

“With its ever-present pioneering spirit, breath-taking natural environment, remarkable amount of sunshine and exceptional snow conditions, it is both unique and cosmopolitan, boasting a lively, sociable and welcoming atmosphere.”

The resort has often been at the front of technology to make the ski experience better for those on the mountain.

In 2011, the resort was the first to equip the ski area with free Wi-Fi.

This year the resort is set to launch “SKiFlux” - a system which will alert skiers in real time to how busy each piste is, making planning your attack of the mountain that much more enjoyable.

After large amounts of early snow, Val Thorens opened a few runs last week ahead of the officials ski season.

Other winners this year were W Verbier, walking away with the title of World's Best Ski Hotel, LAAX, recognised by voters as the World's Best Freestyle Resort and Chalet Pont Du Cam, taking the title of World's Best New Ski Chalet.
