Airline to charge for overhead lockers

Just when we thought flying couldn't get any worse, an airline has decided to charge passengers to use the overhead lockers.

U.S.-based airline, United Airlines, have announced that they will introduce a fee for people who want to stow away large items in the bins over their heads.

Long gone are the days where you would get a free sandwich, cup of tea and a pillow to rest your weary head while traveling, as United are the latest in a stream of airlines to add yet another cost to our holiday.

Along with charging for the overhead bins, it's been claimed United will also not assign any seats until the day of the flight, which means passengers travelling together may be separated.

According to United, the changes are all down to their new “Basic Economy” option, which will be introduced in 2017.

The fare will be less expensive than others however many consumers are not impressed with the terms and conditions attached.

United have explained that The airline’s “Basic Economy” option includes a lot of the same things a "United Economy" ticket does, including "Wi-Fi and inflight entertainment,” however flyers who opt for the cheaper fair will lose the privilege of picking their seats and must board the plane last.

“You’re allowed to bring a small personal item on board, such as a shoulder bag, backpack, laptop bag or other small item that is 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm) or less,” the website states.

“Full-size carry-on bags are not allowed unless you’re a Premier member, a primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card, or a Star Alliance Gold member.”

Passengers will essentially only be allowed to bring a bag which fits under the seat in front of them.

“Customers have told us that they want more choice and Basic Economy delivers just that,” Julia Haywood, executive vice president at United said in a press release.

“By offering low fares while also offering the experience of traveling on our outstanding network, with a variety of onboard amenities and great customer service, we are giving our customers an additional travel option from what United offers today.”

Inited Airline isn't the first carrier to introduce overhead locker fees.

Back in 2010, airline Spirit decided to introduce a $30 fee for travellers who wanted to use the overhead bins.

In July 2010, Ryanair introduced plans to charge passengers for standing-room-only seats, however it never came to fruition.

They also proposed a plan to charge overweight passengers more to fly on their planes however it was decided the process would cause too many delays.
